Castlevania: Lords of Shadows – Mirror of Fate

The demo for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate is now available in the Nintendo eShop on the 3DS, and will be released next week on March 5th.
I’ve played through the demo a few times, and so far so good.  The presentation’s perspective takes a little getting used to, but at its core it’s a 2D side-scroller presented in 3D.  Control’s tight and feels natural, and the couple of bosses in the demo were great.  And it looks like you’ll be able to play as Trevor Belmont, Simon Belmont and Alucard.

Now, the bad news, this game really, really, REALLY wants to be like God of War, with the dramatically sweeping orchestration and inclusion of QTEs (quick time events for those of you not in the know).  All of this is now leaving me on the fence about this title.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadows – Mirror Fate is published by Konami for the 3DS.

  1. Lords of Shadow was basically God of War with a few Castlevania-esque art design choices, so it doesn’t surprise me at all that the 3DS game will have some of that stuff too.

  2. It’s short (even for a demo) but seems like it could be fun. The controls are a little sluggish so hopefully it will tighten up. I’m still trying to confirm or deny these assumptions that this will be a Metroidvania game (I hope). There seems to be some indication to that effect in the demo. Looks good no question. I’ll have to buy the damn thing I guess. :S

  3. They’ve gone on record stating that this game will focus more on exploration, so there you go, you got your wish.

  4. I think I’m the only one that wants another old school 2D straight up action game, like Castlevania III. I doubt we’ll ever get another one.

  5. Yeah, I’m getting the same feeling that this format is going to be the default. It’d be nice if the series went back to 2D, or a polished cell-shaded 2D presentation.
